Use cases based on Visibility Rules Condition Types

Visibility Rules on a web form control the display of certain form elements based on specific conditions or user actions. See the examples below:

Form Field

You can display form fields based on data subject's choices for data elements, Purposes, or Purpose Preferences using the Form Field condition type.

Use Case

This use case describes the visibility rule implementation for displaying the City form field based on the user's selection from a preceding selection menu in the Condition Block section. The City form field should only be displayed if the user previously checks the Event Invitations form field.

For example, if a data subject selects the Event Invitations form field in a newsletter, then the City field will be also displayed to gather additional location information from that particular group of users.

Query Parameter

You can display form fields when a query parameter is included on a web form URL by means of the Query Param condition type.

Use Case

This use case outlines the implementation of a visibility rule for displaying the Alumni Relations Purpose and the associated Communication Frequency and Communication Channel Purpose Preferences. These fields are only shown if the ?brand=brand1 query parameter is present in the URL.

For example, if a data subject is following their university on social media and navigates to a newsletter web form with a URL that may contain the Brand query parameter (e.g. https://university.com/newsletter?brand=brand1), then the Alumni Relations, Communication Frequency, and Communication Channels fields will be displayed requesting them to select their communication preferences to receive the newsletter.

Geolocation

You can display form fields based on region, country, and US states using the Geolocation condition type.

Use Case

This use case describes the implementation of a visibility rule that displays the Location field on a web form provided that the user's geolocation is in Georgia and the geolocation tracking setting is enabled. The Location field should only be displayed when these two conditions are met.

In a scenario where a data subject is interacting with a newsletter web form tracking geolocation while at Emory University, then the Location field will be displayed to accurately determine in which city they are located once the information is provided. For example, you could send them invitations to events in that area at a later time, based on the location that was previously gathered.

Note:

If a visibility rule is configured for a Purpose with a Pre-select a choice action when submitting the form, this will not result in a Confirmed transaction type. You will see a No Opt Out transaction instead.
