Monitoring Policy Trends

The Policy Trend report is a feature of the New Data Policies Experience that allows policy managers to monitor the effectiveness of a Data Policy over time and understand if their policy adherence is improving or worsening. This visualization is useful for those who may need to evaluate if additional security controls or policy trainings are needed based on data that continues to violate policies.

The trend report is refreshed daily, between 12:00 am - 3:00 am UTC. Newly created policies will not see any trends displayed until a full collection cycle has occurred.

To access policy trends

  1. On the Data Catalog menu, select Policy Manager > Data Policies.

    The Data Policies screen appears.

  2. Select the name of a data policy with open violations.

    The Policy Details screen appears.

  3. In the Overview tab, a line graph appears to display open violations according to either Count or by Volume. The graph defaults to the last 3 months' worth of violation data.

  4. Below the graph, you can review the policy's details.

  5. Choose an active data source to display associated violations in the trend report. The field will default to all data sources.

Preview Feature: Select up to 4 data sources and view all violation count trends simultaneously in Policy Trends. This allows catalog users to observe and compare trends across multiple data sources at once.

    Tip:

Currently the module supports rescan for select data sources. Rescan may show a decrease in the violation trend for these data sources; however, violations may be identified from other data sources and impact the trend report when filtered to all data sources.

  6. Choose a date range to sort the trends report to one of the following:
    • Last Week

    • Last Month

    • Last 3 Months

    • Last 6 Months

    • Last Year

    • Custom Date Range (format MM/DD/YYYY)

  7. Switch between View by Count and View by Volume to inspect data. Hover over a data point to display specific details at that given date.

    View data by count

    View data by volume
  8. Click the Violations Count (currently open) number to navigate to the Violations tab.
