Viewing and Understanding the Initiative Score

The Initiative Score, also known as the Compliance Score, reflects how much progress has been made toward completing all required controls and evidence tasks for a given initiative created in Compliance Automation. You can view this score on the Initiative Details screen.

How is the Score Calculated?

The score of an initiative is calculated by taking the average of all completed work for controls and evidence collection over the total work required for this initiative.

Total Score = (Implemented Controls + Collected Evidence Tasks) / (Eligible Controls + Total Evidence Tasks)

Note:

Eligible Controls = Total Controls − (Retired + Not Doing Controls)

Control Implementation Percentage

The controls implemented percentage displays the percentage of controls in this initiative that has been implemented. The controls implemented percentage will always be equal to the score on the Initiative Status pane. The percentage of controls that have been implemented can be calculated using this formula:

(Implemented Controls) / (Total Controls - Retired - Not Doing)

Example: Calculating the Controls Implemented Percentage

  • Total Initiative Controls: 100

  • Total Initiative Controls in Implemented Status: 20

  • Total Initiative Controls in Not Doing Status: 30

  • Total Initiative Controls in Retired Status: 10

Calculation: 20 / (100 - 30 - 10) = 20 / 60 = 33%

The goal is to implement controls to reach your organization’s compliance tolerance level.

Evidence Collected Percentage

The evidence collected percentage displays the percentage of evidence tasks related to the initiative that has been collected. The percentage of evidence tasks that have been marked as Collected can be calculated using this formula:

(Evidence Tasks with Collected Status) / (Total Evidence Tasks)

Calculating the Evidence Collected Percentage

  • Total Evidence Tasks Collected: 5

  • Total Initiative Evidence Tasks: 10

Calculation: 5 / 10 = 50%

The goal is to collect evidence to reach your organization’s compliance tolerance level.

How do Statuses Impact the Score?

Control Statuses

The following statuses are available for controls and are included in the initiative score (compliance score) calculation:

  • Controls in the Implemented status are included in the total count of completed controls.

  • Controls in the Pending status are counted as open and are included in the total count of controls.

  • Controls in the Not Doing and Retired statues are excluded from the total count of controls.

The score updates in real time when control statuses change. For example, if a user updates the status of a control from Pending to Implemented, the initiative score will increase. Alternatively, if a user updates the status from Implemented to Pending, the score will decrease.

Evidence Task Statuses

The following statuses are available for evidence tasks and are included in the initiative score (compliance score) calculation:

  • Evidence tasks in the Collected status are included in the total count towards the score.

  • Evidence tasks in the Not Collected, In Progress, and Overdue statuses are excluded from the total count.

The score updates in real time when evidence task statuses change. You must submit evidence by uploading files, notes, or URLs to change an evidence tasks' Overall Status to Collected. For more information, see Collecting and Managing Evidence Task.

Example: Calculating the Total Score Percentage

Total Score = (Implemented Controls + Collected Evidence Tasks) / (Eligible Controls + Total Evidence Tasks)

  • Total Initiative Controls: 100

    • Total Initiative Controls in Implemented Status: 20

    • Total Initiative Controls in Not Doing Status: 30

    • Total Initiative Controls in Retired Status: 10

  • Total Initiative Evidence Tasks: 200

    • Total Evidence Tasks Collected: 50

Calculation: (20 +50) / ((100 - 30 -10) + 200) = 70 / 260 = 27%

The goal is to implement controls and collect evidence to reach your organization’s compliance tolerance level.
