Handling Data Elements with Multiple Categories or Classifications

You can now organize and streamline your data elements without having to deal with duplicates and unstructured data.

Why am I seeing an orange warning on some of my data elements on my data elements configuration screen?

The data element is linked to multiple categories and that is not currently supported in the new model. We have simplified and changed the structure so that a data element can only belong to one data category (required) and can have one classification (optional). These steps should help you fix the issue:

  1. On the Data Mapping Automation menu, select Inventory Manager. The Inventory Manager screen appears.

  2. Click the View button on the Personal Data Configuration tile. The Personal Data Configuration screen appears.

  3. Select the Data Elements tab.

  4. Hover over the data category you want to edit until the Context Menu icon button appears.

  5. Click the Context Menu button.

  6. On the Context menu, select Edit. The Edit Data Element modal appears.

  7. Click the Save button.

What happens if you do not fix the issue and/or want multiple categories?

You can keep the data element in multiple categories or classifications, but it will remain highlighted in the data elements configuration screen.

Important:

When you link that data element to an inventory, the system will automatically select all of the data categories that data element associates with, which will appear on the related data elements tab in your report.

Data Categories and Data Classifications are properties of a data element which are inherited by an inventory object (asset, process, etc) when linked.
