A/B Testing Best Practices

Overview

Improving user opt-in rates starts with understanding how consent banners perform across your user audiences. This guide outlines actionable best practices, from analyzing granular consent data to optimizing banner design and running A/B tests. Whether you are refining your current setup or launching new variants, these strategies will help you drive meaningful improvements while staying compliant.

Review the opt-in rate for your domains using the Insights Dashboard to understand current consent trends.

Best Practices:

  • Leverage granular consent analytics.

    • Location Analytics: Understand how user behavior varies by region. Differences in banner design and regulatory awareness can impact consent rates.

    • Device & Browser Analytics: Banner appearance may vary by device or browser. Use this data to identify the most common platforms and tailor banner designs accordingly.

    Note:

If you see a high number of unknown entries in location, browser, or device data, you can set the advanced analytics configuration to the Strictly Necessary or Notice Only category. This ensures that these analytics are collected for all receipts.

2. Optimize template design

Review your current template for each geolocation rule. Collaborate with UI designers to enhance the design for better opt-in rates. Ensure all changes comply with regulatory requirements.

Best Practices:

  • Limit changes in each variant to one or (at most) two related elements to clearly attribute impact during A/B testing.

  • Use the Copy Template feature to duplicate and modify existing templates.

  • Explore styling, custom CSS, banner interactions, and messaging to align your banner designs with your brand. Explore ways to draw users' attention to accepting cookies.

    • Refer to the common CSS changes article and consult your web developer for any additional customizations.

    • Design device-specific consent banners; for example, ensure the Accept button is easily reachable on mobile screens or the banner layout is clearly visible on desktops. Use CSS media queries to tailor the experience for different devices.

3. Set up A/B tests

Create and publish A/B tests to evaluate template performance across geolocation rules. Learn more about configuring A/B testing steps here.

Best Practices:

  • Run tests on non-campaign days to avoid skewed results from atypical traffic.

  • Use large sample sizes for statistically significant insights.

  • For low-traffic domains (e.g., hundreds of users/day), extend the test duration accordingly.

4. Analyze A/B test results

  • Review interaction metrics, including opt-in, opt-out, and no-response rates for each template variant.

  • If Advanced Analytics is enabled, assess how well each variant performed across different audience segments.

  • Based on the results, refine variant designs and run tests to find optimal opt-in rates for your websites.
