Creating Risk Hierarchies
The Nested Table and Tree View for Risk Hierarchy feature is under Public Preview. Please contact OneTrust Support to request early access.
Overview
The risk hierarchy feature enables you to configure multi-level risk relationships, seamlessly connecting various risks within your organization. These hierarchies encompass diverse risk types, including strategic, reputational, financial, and operational risks.
By leveraging risk hierarchies, users can relate risks across different domains, facilitating comprehensive enterprise-level risk analysis through a top-down approach. This method empowers risk and compliance teams to identify the most critical risks to the business and gather data on their impact. The top-level risks incorporate the scores of all subordinate risks, aiding in strategic decision-making.
Key Benefits
The key benefits to creating risk hierarchies include:
- Simplify Reporting
-
Save time and resources by streamlining data collection and aggregation for reporting insights.
- Prioritize Actions Based on a Holistic View of Risks
-
Balance top-down and bottom-up insights with roll up functionality, linking relationships between parent and child risk to better understand total impact, and influence the concentration of the risks.
- Improve Cross-Functional Ownership & Collaboration
-
Align child-level risks across domains to enterprise impact to better delegate and communicate risk management activities.
Steps for Creating Risk Hierarchies
In order to configure a risk hierarchy, you must complete each step outlined below.
Step 1: Add Related Parent-Child Risks
The ability to add, edit, and update parent-child relationships is only accessible within IT Risk Management. This ability is not accessible via the Risk menu.
You can add related parent and child risks to records within your Risk Register to establish a risk hierarchy and prioritize risk treatment plans. Related parent and child risks must be added to view and manage your risk hierarchy. These related risk help to quantify and track common risks impacting the enterprise as a whole by identifying the parent risk. The Hierarchical Insights section on the Details tab of the risk record gets populated based on the Risk Hierarchy information. The section includes parent and child risk details.
Add a single parent risk to an existing risk record to identify the enterprise-level risks within your organization. Parent risks are identified by your risk and compliance team and help to create a logical grouping of similar risks. Since the parent risk is a higher-level risk, it encompasses all child risks.
Child risks are the function-level risks created and owned by various department heads within your organization. Unlike a parent risk, you can add multiple child risks to a risk record.
To add a parent risk
The RiskV2Edit permission is required to add a parent risk.

To change a parent risk
Risks can dynamically change over time due to various factors such as business strategy acquisitions, resource shifts, and environmental factors. As a result, the nature of each risk and sub-risk being reported are likely to change.
To account for these changes, you can replace an existing parent risk that has been added to a risk record.

The import allows you to populate a large volume of related risks at once to decrease the time needed to configure risk-to-risk relationships and build your risk hierarchy. The Relate Risks import template includes various informational tabs that can be used to help you prepare and complete the bulk import successfully. The import of risk relations assumes the risks already exists in the Risk Register.
The RisksBulkImport and ERMRelateRisks permissions are required in order to perform the bulk import to relate risks to other risks.

Step 3: Visualize Relationships in the Risk Hierarchy Explorer
Key benefits of using the Risk Hierarchy Explorer includes:
-
Easier to locate risk dependencies and discover potential risks
-
Streamlines risk-driven decisions supported by aggregation metrics for simplified reporting.
-
Establishes a foundation to elevate risk management in line with business objectives.
-
Improves visibility of the interconnectedness and roll-up of risk with a structured categorization for clearer enterprise context.
To view parent-child relationships
In order for parent and child relationships to appear in the Risk Hierarchy Explorer, you must first add related risks to a risk record.
The Risk Hierarchy Explorer screen displays the parent and child relationships within your organization. Parent and child risks relationships work together to form a hierarchy. The relationships appear as a tree hierarchy to show a complete contextual view of the risk universe. The tree view allows users to easily identify the aggregated risk scores and contributing risk factors rolling up to the enterprise level risk. You can expand the tree hierarchy to view the parent and child level risks.
Each relationship shown in the risk hierarchy tree view displays the risk name, the number of child risks associated with the record, risk scoring attributes, and rolled-up risk scores. The list of roll-up attributes and applicable aggregator function can be configured as per enterprise needs, this activity is tracked in the Attribute Manager which will be managed by the application administrator.
-
On the IT & Security Risk Management menu, select . The Risk Hierarchy Explorer screen appears with information related to the parent and child risks relationships.

-
Replacing the parent risk will remap all its children and grandchildren risks to the new parent. This will place the new parent as level 1, with children and grandchildren assuming level 2 and beyond.
-
You can only add a new child risk. The only way to remove a child risk is to replace its parent.
-
-
Click the Reset Tree View button to reset the screen view to the original configuration.

Configure Roll-up Attributes for Risk Aggregation
In the IT & Security Risk Management product, risk scores are calculated across the risk hierarchy. These methods allow stakeholders to monitor their risk posture and provide visibility of the overall aggregated risk score.
Site Admins can define the roll-up configuration for the enterprise using the Attribute Manager. The system will automatically roll-up the risk scores computed at individual risks to the parent risks by factoring inherent risk scores, annual loss expectancy (ALE), control effectiveness score, and the residual risk score for the selected aggregation methodology. This roll-up allows the risk managers to monitor their enterprise risk posture. The OneTrust system roll-up attributes include Inherent and Residual Score.
To add an aggregated attribute
To skip a risk from being considered in the rollup without removing it from the hierarchy, leave the Inherent and Residual Scores blank.
-
On the IT & Security Risk Management menu, select . The Attribute Manager screen appears.
