About Volume Scanning with Data Discovery

The term 'volume scanned' refers to the amount of data extracted from objects in a data source. OneTrust uses this information to calculate cloud statistics and generate scanner usage reports, helping organizations track data scanning accurately based on their consumption.

'Volume scanned' is displayed in the following places across the application:

Job level (Job insights)

Listed on each Job overview tab in a Scan job details screen of a data source, the Volume scanned figure represents the total amount of data extracted by this job, which is the cumulative sum of the content sizes of all the files extracted during the job.

For example, in the job below, 236 files were scanned, and the combined content size of these files is 30.24 MB.

The content size of each file is obtained from the file's metadata. This will be displayed accurately once all results are published.

Data size is calculated differently for each connector:

  • For file-based connectors, the file content size is obtained from file metadata.

  • For RDBMS connectors, the data is stored in rows and columns.

  • For app and NoSQL-based connectors, it is determined by the size of JSON response attribute values.

Limits and filters on the scan profile, such as the representative data set scan, min and max file sizes, object limits, include/exclude paths, include/exclude file types, and file limit, will affect the volume. Additionally, when considering archived files, use the archived file size rather than the extracted file size.

Note:

For more information, see Reviewing Job Insights.

Data source level

In the Data sources list screen, the volume displayed at the data source level does not represent the cumulative sum of each job's scanned volume. Instead, it reflects the content size of distinct files scanned within the data source.

For instance, if the same file is scanned by multiple jobs within the data source, the data source-level volume size should be considered as the content size of that file as a single entity. In other words, it represents the aggregated content size of distinct files scanned by the data source.

Tenant level

The Total volume scanned widget displayed on the Control center dashboard represents the aggregated size of data scanned from all the data sources for that tenant (parent-level org only). It is the sum of all data source-level volumes, including volumes from deleted data sources over all time.

For example, in the screenshot below, this tenant has scanned a total of 2.48 TB of data across all data sources over time.
