Universal Consent & Preference Management Overview

Introduction to Universal Consent & Preference Management

Data is the foundation of digital transformation and innovation in the digital-first economy. Responsible data management unlocks endless possibilities for businesses. As massive digital and privacy-centric shifts change the way organizations use data to engage and retain audiences, businesses are evolving their consent strategy beyond a CMP to a universal consent and preference management program. This empowers organizations to honor consent throughout the data lifecycle to mitigate compliance risk, drive personalized experiences, and build brand trust.

OneTrust Universal Consent and Preference Management enables customers to use one platform as a central system of record to manage consent, preferences, and durable identifiers across the customer journey, from data collection to channel activation, while ensuring compliance with data privacy laws. Built to scale, OneTrust captures over 450 million consent transactions per day and over 3 billion consent transactions a week.

OneTrust Universal Consent and Preference Management provides a solution that can help organizations fulfill the requirements to comply with many frameworks and certifications. Below is a list of some of the popular privacy frameworks that this module can help with.

Framework

Framework Description

PIPEDA

The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) is a Canadian federal privacy law, introduced in April 2000. The law aims to regulate the use of personal information in commercial activity by private-sector organizations and outlines several key requirements for compliance.

GDPR:

The GDPR is the strongest global privacy law in effect today. Created by the European Union (EU) to regulate how organizations collect, handle, and protect personal data of EU residents. It also defines eight data subject rights that guarantee specific entitlements for individual’s personal data. Ultimately giving individuals more autonomy over their personal information and how it is used.

CCPA

CCPA compliance means that covered businesses – for-profit entities that fall under the scope of the CCPA – can demonstrably meet obligations set out under the CCPA, including a range of new consumer rights, a new definition of personal information, and new concepts of businesses and service providers in relation to the roles of controller and processor.

LGPD

Similar to the GDPR, the LGPD, or Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados, applies to the processing of data by organizations within Brazil, but also to organizations outside Brazil under certain circumstances. LGPD compliance provides significant benefits to data subjects who will be afforded new rights.

Relationship in OneTrust Platform

Universal Consent and Preference Management can integrate with other OneTrust modules to enable enhanced features:

  • Cookie Consent: When adding a geolocation rule, there is an option to connect the cookies module. After setting up a cookie banner and publishing it, customers (Data Subjects) that interact with that banner will have their consent and preferences stored as a receipt in the receipts section of the Consent & Preferences Management module. Cookie Purposes are also populated from categorizations in the cookies module.
